(Spoken)
He was an old country doctor
In a little town
and fortune had passed him by
But we saw him frown
As day by day in his way
He us one and all
Many a patient to pay
Altho' fees were small

But Old Doc Brown seem to mind
He didn't send out bills
His only ambition was to
It seems, sure cures for aches and
Why nearly half the folks in my home
Yes, I'm one of too
Were in by Old Doc Brown
When we made our first

Tho' he needed his and there were times
That he'd a fee
pass it on to some poor soul
That needed it than he
But the depression hit our town
And drained each purse
The scanty of Old Doc Brown
Just from bad to worse

He had to all of his furniture
Why, he couldn't pay his office rent
So to a room over a Livery stable
Doc Brown and his went
On the post at the curb below
To advertise his
He nailed a little sign read
Brown has moved upstairs'

There he kept on folks get well
And his heart was just pure
But anyone eyes could see
Doc was gettin' old
And then one day he even answer
When they knocked upon his
Old Doc Brown was down
But his soul - was no

They found him there in an old suit
And on his was a smile of content
But all the money they find on him
Was a quarter and a cent
So they up his ledger
And what saw gave their hearts a pull
each debtor's name
Old Doc had (*writ) words, 'Paid in full'

It like the potter's field for Doc
That us some alarm
'Til someone 'membered the graveyard
Out on the farm
Old doc had brought six of their
And Simmons was a cuss
He said, Doc's been like one of the
So, you can let him with us

Old Doc should have had a
enough for a king
It's a ghastly that our town was broke
And no one could give a
'Cept Jones, the
He did well
Donatin' an old casket
he'd never been able to sell

And the funeral procession, it much
For grace and and style
But those wagon loads of
stretched out for more than a mile
And we breathed a prayer as we laid him
To rest the sod
This man who'd earned the
To be on terms with God

His grave was covered with
But not the floral shops
Just roses and things from garden
And one or two pots
For the depression had hit our town hard
And each man a load
So some just picked the
As they passed the road

We to give him a monument
Kinda we owed him one
'Cause made our town a better place
For all the good he'd
But cost money
So, we did the we could
And on his grave we gently
A - of wood

We up that old hitchin' post
Doc had nailed his sign
And we painted it and to all of us
It did look fine
Now the and snow has washed away
Our white trimmings of
And ain't nothin' left but Doc's own sign
And that is gettin'

Still, when southern breezes and stars
our sleeping town
And the pale moon shines through Kentucky
On the of Old Doc Brown
You can still see old hitchin' post
As if an answer to our
Mutely the whole wide world
Doc has moved up stairs
